Although fibroids are a benign condition, they can cause debilitating symptoms which can have serious effects on a woman’s quality of life. While there is widespread information on fibroids, closer inspection reveals this to be sometimes inaccurate or biased towards commercial healthcare interests. It is still difficult for women to get a true picture of this condition and ensure they are offered all treatment options so that they can make the right choice.
We have therefore made this app to educate, inform and ensure women are empowered when faced with this condition. Our team comprises Dr Varma and Dr Kaikini who have considerable clinical experience in managing women with fibroids as part of their NHS consultant responsibilities and are utilising state-of-the art treatment technologies to successfully treat such women. Dr On, has a unique perspective of the condition, being both an expert in the pharmacological treatment of fibroids as well as having personal experience of fibroids herself. We offer this app to women who are affected by fibroids, their friends and relatives who wish to understand more in order to offer best support, and to allied health professionals who seek further information.
The content of this app is deliberately laid out to follow a woman’s healthcare pathway journey, from onset of symptoms, investigations, diagnosis and treatment. Each treatment method is presented as a “ready-to-pull-out” fact file. Given the degree of concern surrounding infertility and fibroids, we have dedicated a specific section to address this concern. We are conscious of the psychological impact of fibroids and we have therefore presented a section explaining coping strategies and emotional support. In our final part of the app, we report selected anonymised case histories to provide the reader with a realistic perspective. These genuine stories demonstrate that cases do not always follow medical textbooks, healthcare providers sometimes do not have all the answers and, above all, you are not alone.
You can look up for Frequently Asked Questions about the condition, watch video of an operation and see interactive slide presentations of some surgical procedures which aim to further educate and inform you.
